Countrified Kitchens and Bathrooms

There is something intrinsically Australian about our love for the countryside – it’s fresh air, the rolling hills and the gum trees, all of which are reflected in the warm, relaxing aesthetics of country style living. It is understandable then that this cosy, peaceful, country aesthetic is becoming increasingly popular for interior designs, regardless of whether you live in the country or metro areas, and many are choosing to adapt this style into their kitchens and bathrooms. Emily Axford from Melbourne Kitchen + Bathroom Design sits down with Dan Bruce, the managing director and design and project manager from Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms to discuss the country style aesthetic and how to incorporate it into your own home.

A TIMELESS ALLURE
A country style draws from the culture that it’s in and shows it off in the best way possible. It is full of raw and natural materials and can seem to some as unapologetically old fashioned. The style grew in popularity in the ‘90s and has had a resurgence in current times. People are now craving a more wholesome look and feel in their home and this resurgence has even influenced major TV shows such as The Block. As Bruce notes, “for renovations and new homes alike, Australia’s architectural roots are grounded in the country lifestyle.”

So, what is it about the country style that is so attractive? As Bruce explains, “there is a timeless allure to country style cabinetry and design.” He continues, “we find our clients like the warmth and detail of the country style, adding character to their homes, compared to the modern straight lines with less warmth.” Flexibility is also an endorsing element of the country style, with people being able to add as much or as little rustic charm as they like. Bruce remarks that more and more, the country style is being combined with the necessities of a modern lifestyle with designs that “honour tradition while catering to contemporary living needs.”

COUNTRY COLOURS
As aforementioned, the country style draws from its surroundings and flaunts it, creating a cohesiveness between inside and outside. Bruce elaborates, saying that the country style is meant to “create spaces that exude warmth, authenticity and a connection to the land, making every day feel like a retreat in the countryside.” The country style celebrates the colours of the countryside, so the style embodies neutral colours, textures and materials to establish a countrified look. From sage green to whites, yellows, light blue and beige, “you simply cannot go wrong with a warm palette that does not feel cold or stark.” Bruce further elaborates saying to pair these “calming and serene hues with wood, tiles and neutral shade benchtops.”
These colours promote the calm and serenity that is associated with the style.

Timber materials or other types of wood are regularly seen in country style interiors as they evoke a rustic charm, however you do have to be careful with what wood you use. Blonde timbers or dark walnuts may be too light or dark for the aesthetic you are going for or emote the wrong emotions, whereas wood such as Tasmanian oak or Australian blackbutt timber have a nice medium colouring and create a natural, relaxing atmosphere.

IT’S IN THE DETAILS
Features and décor are where the country style really comes to life. “Incorporating classic elements such as shaker profile doors and the iconic cottage sink adds authentic character,” Bruce suggests. “Ample storage ensures functionality without compromising on style, while integrating modern appliances maintains convenience.” Whatever features you decide to include, Bruce recommends ensuring that they have “durable finishes that withstand daily use.”

Where possible, natural light should be emphasised when creating a country style kitchen or bathroom.

Including large windows that frame the picturesque countryside views (if you have them) is a great way of filling the space with light while “seamlessly blending indoor and alfresco living.” If installing large windows is not an option, having a window backsplash in your kitchen or a skylight in the bathroom are other great ways to let in the light. “Whimsical embellishments such as antique pots and kitchen relics add a sense of feeling to the country landscape,” Bruce details. Utilising art and furniture that gives a nod to nature or complements your colour scheme can polish off a country style kitchen or bathroom. However, keep in mind that your décor should be personal and should reflect you rather than just something you think works in the room but you don’t love.

A WORD OF ADVICE
Regardless of style and whether you are looking to remodel your kitchen and bathroom yourself or employ a professional, Bruce strongly recommends “working with an accredited designer of interior and alfresco spaces as it will make an invaluable difference to your project.” He continues, “It’s easy to fill a space with cabinets, but much harder to make the space both functional and beautiful. That’s where a good designer is worth their weight in gold. They meet with you in your home and use their experience to come up with design and space saving ideas.” Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms welcomes you to make an appointment to visit its showroom to discuss your own custom cabinetry needs.
