Smith & Smith Kitchens Project 35

This generous family kitchen puts style and function at the top of the list. Smith & Smith Kitchens’ Laly Renehan produced a design that incorporates sweeping battened curves to contrast against a streamlined linear layout for a minimalist aesthetic that remains true to the practical requirements of family life. Warm timber tones and textures combine with dark paintwork to give a cosy, contemporary feel.

A range of aesthetic materials were used, from the precise white joinery encased in striking black timber battens, to the sleek 1200mm-long cooktop, which abides by the linear design with its recessed installation into the Caesarstone ‘Cloudburst’ benchtop. The choice to keep the cooktop flush maximises the amount of bench space and allows for an uncluttered look. A stone ledge behind the cooktop offers a spot for decorative display and cooking essentials such as oil and seasoning.

The homeowners wanted the kitchen to become a social hub of sorts, perfectly achieved by the oversized sink located at the centre of the four-metre-long island bench, which allows guests to interact with the cook. This flush-mounted Abey sink is commercially sized to make washing up a breeze.

Continuing the entertaining potential in the kitchen is the in-built wine station at the end of the island bench, consisting of two open shelves and a discreet drawer. Further storage can be found in the pantry concealed behind the kitchen, showcasing room for an out-of-the-way appliance set-up and ample dry-goods storage.

To maintain the clean lines of the design, Smith & Smith Kitchens opted for a fully integrated Miele dishwasher, plus double in-built ovens in black that flow seamlessly with the matte-black Stylelite acrylic panelling. Electronically assisted hands-free bins improve the overall cleanliness and take the kitchen’s practicality to the next level, proving state-of-the-art appliances are the key to a refined and ergonomic kitchen.

Task-specific lighting ensures each zone is well-lit, from the recessed LED lights above the cooktop to the downlights in the main area. Cleverly, the LEDs can even be dimmed with a wave of a hand. Moooi Random pendant lights above the island bench provide additional lighting while showcasing the designer’s magnificent eye for creativity, rounding off the design with a little flair.
