Smith & Smith Projects 20
Spacious and light-filled, this rustic farmhouse-style kitchen was designed by Rebecca Underwood for Smith & Smith Kitchens. Featuring a harmonious blend of modern elements and classic style, the design preserves the integrity of the existing dwelling while creating a functional area with everyday convenience.
The brief given to Smith & Smith Kitchens was for a space what would be ideal for entertaining and relaxing, and a worthy backdrop for the clients’ extensive collection of original artworks. Preserving the existing floorboards and the timber wall panelling proved the biggest hurdle for Smith & Smith Kitchens, but one that the experienced team overcame with meticulous planning and careful execution. The custom-designed chimney alcove is pleasingly at home with the original features of the kitchen, while the glass splashback is a subtle addition that doesn’t detract from the beautiful simplicity of the space.
Featuring expansive windows that flood the space with plenty of natural light, a soaring ceiling, and warm wooden accents, the kitchen welcomes its occupants and guests alike. The simple yet stunning design leaves the floor open for the clients’ generous table, which immediately draws the eye, inviting family and friends to sit down with a cup of tea, or perhaps a glass of wine.
Custom-made benchtops and low timber rises in white American oak beautifully complement the clients’ farmhouse table, while providing a striking contrast with the shaker-style cabinets, painted in Dulux ‘Timeless Grey’. The unobtrusive design and colour of the cabinets allow the rich, warm timber to be the hero of the room, almost glowing in the plentiful sunlight. The lush greenery of the garden visible through the generous windows contributes to the restrained and elegant palette. A well-stocked timber wine rack adds a touch of playfulness.
The mature and delightfully understated design contains all the modern necessities, seamlessly integrated into the kitchen’s classic style. A Falcon CDL110 freestanding cooktop sits proudly beneath the chimney alcove, anchoring the kitchen in the homely tradition of the farmhouse stove. The Qasair rangehood is skillfully concealed, allowing the clean lines of the chimney alcove to shine. With Blum fixtures, and a Bosch dishwasher, the contemporary and classic elements of the kitchen sit easily side by side. Smith & Smith Kitchens’ clients envisaged a kitchen replete with personality – the hub of their forever home, and there is no doubt the company delivered.
