Making A Splash

In the kitchen, every detail matters – and few elements make an impact quite like the splashback. It’s a canvas for creativity, aesthetic and style that needs to be as functional as it is fresh. Dive into the art of the splashback as Hannah McDonald from Melbourne Kitchen + Bathroom Design joins Tamara Rees, founder of Tamara Jane Kitchens, to settle the debate: should it sink into the background or steal the spotlight as your kitchen’s showpiece?

Tamara and David Rees ventured out with their family owned business in 2018, combining more than thirty years of experience in custom joinery. Tamara Rees says, “as a company, we specialise in bespoke kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, wardrobes and other residential spaces – all designed and built locally in Australia. We’re passionate about quality craftsmanship, thoughtful design and supporting local suppliers to create spaces that are both beautiful and functional.”

When it comes to kitchen design, Rees has a keen eye for what makes a splashback the ideal focal point in any space. “Splashbacks are key to creating cohesion in a kitchen. They bridge the gap between countertops, cabinetry and flooring by echoing colours, textures or finishes, helping everything feel connected. Whether it’s a subtle match or a contrasting pop, the splashback can unify or elevate the overall design – making the space feel polished and complete,” Rees explains

SEAMLESS OR SPOTLIGHT?

Rees stays well attuned with the latest design trends. While styles continue to evolve, she points out that a classic, minimalist aesthetic remains timeless. “We’re seeing a strong return to timeless materials and finishes. Classic stone splashbacks, especially porcelain slabs, remain favourites for their elegance, durability and ability to seamlessly flow with benchtops. Subway tiles are still popular, but with subtle updates: handmade finishes, longer proportions, and earthy, matte tones. Homeowners are also gravitating toward materials that are low-maintenance and offer a clean, uninterrupted look. Glass splashbacks are highly sought-after for their sleek, reflective finish and effortless cleaning,” she adds.

While maintaining a pared-back aesthetic, Rees still sees the splashback as a chance to infuse the space with character and visual interest. “In a minimalist or neutral kitchen, the splashback is the perfect place to add subtle drama.

A bold stone slab with beautiful veining or a textured tile in a soft tone can become the hero of the space without overpowering it. It’s all about contrast and balance – letting the splashback bring personality while the rest of the design stays refined and understated,” she articulates.

Although the classic look has long reigned supreme, Rees predicts splashbacks will take on a more prominent role in kitchen design. “Looking ahead, we see splashbacks evolving into statement features. Think bold porcelain slabs, dramatic veining and full height installations that create a seamless flow with benchtops,” she describes. “If you’re leaning toward a bold splashback, our tip is to let it shine by keeping the rest of the finishes more understated. A standout splashback can elevate a space, but it should still feel harmonious with the overall design. And always consider timelessness and resale when making bold choices,” she advises.

KEEP IT PRACTICAL

While choosing colours, textures and styles is the exciting part, it’s equally important to carefully consider the practical function of a splashback. “When helping clients choose a splashback, we always start by understanding how they use their kitchen – both practically and aesthetically. We guide them toward materials that complement their overall style but also hold up to daily life.” Rees emphasises that thoughtful planning is key to a seamless splashback design, especially when working around the kitchen’s structural elements. “We always plan splashback design around power outlets, windows, and architectural interruptions, aiming to keep lines clean and intentional. Whether it’s aligning grout lines or running veining across surfaces, our coordination with trades ensures a cohesive look,” she assures.

When things heat up in the kitchen, material choice matters. “We avoid all materials that are not heat-rated for splashbacks.

Consideration is needed if a product has been selected that is not heat-rated. We will guide clients toward more practical alternatives that still achieve the look they’re after, without the added hassle,” Rees advises. “Porcelain and engineered stone are top choices for their heat resistance, non-porous nature, and easy upkeep. Tiles remain a solid, low-maintenance option with broad style versatility,” she notes.

PRO POINTERS

When hashing out the details, Rees gives advice depending on what your overall vision is. She expands, “we usually start with the big-picture elements – layout, cabinetry style, and benchtops – since these set the tone and function of the kitchen. The splashback is important, but it typically complements the main design rather than leading it. That said, for clients who want the splashback to be a standout feature, we absolutely integrate it early to ensure everything flows beautifully.” However, she retains that classic is always best for a kitchen to remain timeless. “Steer away from trend-driven finishes that may date quickly. Instead, opt for surfaces that enhance the palette and add impact without overwhelming. A timeless stone slab or classic tile with a bit of texture can elevate the space while still feeling relevant ten years from now,” she offers.

At the end of the day, your splashback should be a perfect balance – a striking expression of your style and a seamless embodiment of the rhythms of your daily life. “Designing a kitchen is about more than just looks – it’s about creating a space that works beautifully for your lifestyle and stands the test of time. At Tamara Jane Kitchens, we’re passionate about blending style, functionality, and quality craftsmanship to deliver spaces our clients love living in every day,” she concludes.
