Trendy Today, Timeless Tomorrow

As with any industry, the world of kitchen and bathroom design is rampant with trends, steering many homeowners towards what’s ‘hot right now’, instead of what is fresh forever. With so many fads – pushed through word of mouth or popping up on your socials – it’s hard to know what trend of today will continue to look classic. Join Melbourne Kitchen + Bathroom Design’s Hannah McDonald as she sits down with Rhys Ewart, director of Dreamcraft Interiors, to discuss the builder’s balancing act – how to weigh up current design trends with long lasting, timeless appeal.

Based in Epping, Ewart is a trusted and dedicated builder of custom kitchens, bathrooms and joinery – crafting client’s dream spaces to perfection with his years of experience. “Dreamcraft Interiors was born after I had been working for my boss for 19 years. I was doing private work on the side, which started to become more and more substantial. One day, there came a point when I had clarity – I needed to leave and start my own business, so from there I got the ball rolling. That was almost 10 years ago,” he recounts.

As he ventured out on his own, Ewart had a clear vision that stemmed from his years of experience. “Already coming from a background of building mid- to high-end joinery, Dreamcraft Interiors was going to be no different. We specialise in bespoke, custom
joinery – whether it be a kitchen or a full house fit-out. Our philosophy is ‘You dream it, we’ll create it’,” he explains. The range of what Dreamcraft Interiors can do is expansive and masterful. Ewart specifies, “we work with laminates right though to full Hampton style two pack kitchens.” With this scope of expertise, Ewart has observed the incoming trends and how they hold up to more classic, lasting styles.

THE STYLE FORECAST

With his finger on the pulse of all things kitchen and bathroom, Ewart describes the styles that are taking designers and dreamers by storm. “On trend at the moment is, without a doubt, two-pack painted, Hampton’s style kitchens with stunning Calacutta stone benchtops to match. We also are seeing a lot of laminate matte finish jobs come through, especially dark greens, navy, blues and black,” he reports.

“We’re also using a lot of timber grain laminates and panelling; shark nose and bevel finger pull handles; zip taps; full height joinery to ceilings; and integrated appliances, like dishwashers, fridges and freezers,” he adds.

With trends going through a perpetual cycle, it’s important to know what’s coming around the bend. When asked if there are any trends that are emerging, yet not fully realised, Ewart’s answer was clear. “Definitely stonework,” he says. “We’re now cladding full island benches, rangehood cabinets and splashbacks.” Another area he sees massive design developments in is lighting. Many homeowners are integrating strip lighting to highlight specific, key areas of the design, like splashbacks. “LED lights throughout joinery can really enhance the look and overall aesthetics,” he expands.

For Ewart, trends will forever cycle, but communication, collaboration and precise forethought and groundwork will execute any design to its highest possible standard – and quality craftsmanship always looks timeless. “Styles change every few years, but kitchens will remain functional through proper and thorough planning,” he asserts.

DESIGN DIALOGUE
As with most tasks involving several parties, communication is the cornerstone that can make or break a project. In Ewart’s mind, being open, forthright and authentic with everyone involved is the only honest way to work. “All of our work is custom, so it comes down to the needs and wants of each customer we work with. Often a designer has already been involved. Having been in the industry for so long, I’ve usually got a pretty good idea of what will work and what won’t and have a very upfront approach,” he explains.

Ideas often evolve into widespread trends through media saturation. From features in design magazines to a constant presence on style-centric Instagram accounts, repeated exposure pushes trends to the forefront of clients’ minds. While the thought of incorporating something new into your home can be thrilling, open and honest communication with trusted professionals is the most reliable way to gain clarity on what’s truly feasible. “Again, years in the industry have given me knowledge and insight to what elements work and don’t work together,” Ewart continues.

NAIL IT RIGHT

Ewart offers some sage advice for those weighing up what trends to follow and which to ditch. “Do your research. Keep up to date with current designs and trends, as well as keeping in mind past trends – often these will make a comeback,” he explains. An easy way to sidestep creating a dated space is to go for a look that never goes out of style. “Whites and neutrals. Sometimes less is more.,” Ewart specifies. “Selection of materials plays a big part, sometimes you just can’t beat a laminate kitchen with reconstituted stone benchtops. It will last a lifetime. Quality European hardware also plays a pivotal role in this.”

To conclude, Ewart signs off with a clear and simple sentiment: “Make sure you love your design.” Take on all of the expert advice available, but at the end of the day, you’re the one who will live in the space – so make it truly yours.
